Mars View: Privacy policy

Last updated: 11 July 2026

Mars View is a free Android app developed by Tobias Thierer, an individual developer based in Germany ("I"/"me"). I am the data controller for the limited processing described below. You can contact me about anything privacy-related at marsviewandroid@gmail.com.

Summary

This app does not collect, store, or share any personal data. It has no user accounts, shows no ads, contains no analytics, crash-reporting, tracking, or other third-party data-collecting components, and it does not sell or share personal information (there is none to sell). I do not collect your name, email address, location, contacts, photos, or device identifiers.

Data stored on your device (and only there)

To work smoothly, the app keeps some data locally on your device:

This data never leaves your device. It is deleted when you clear the app's storage or uninstall the app. The app also reads your device's orientation sensors, purely on-device, so you can look around by moving your phone; sensor readings are never stored or transmitted.

Data processed when the app downloads imagery

The app downloads Mars pictures and associated metadata over HTTPS from a storage bucket I operate on Amazon Web Services (Amazon S3, hosted in the EU: region eu-central-1, Frankfurt). Like any internet download, these requests necessarily expose technical connection metadata to the hosting infrastructure: your IP address, the requested file, a timestamp, and a user-agent string.

I do not collect or review server access logs; access logging is not enabled for the bucket. Amazon Web Services processes this connection metadata as technically necessary to deliver the downloads and operate its infrastructure, acting as my hosting provider (processor) under its GDPR Data Processing Addendum. The data is not used to identify you, not combined with other data, and not shared with anyone else.

Purpose and legal basis: this processing happens solely to deliver the imagery you request and to keep the service secure and operational. The legal basis is legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) in serving the requested content and maintaining the operability and security of the service.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection. Because I hold no data that identifies you, there will normally be nothing I can match to you if you exercise these rights (Art. 11 GDPR), but you are welcome to contact me at the address above. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, for example the authority responsible for your place of residence, or the German supervisory authority responsible for mine.

Children

This app does not collect personal information from any user, including children.

Permissions used by the app

Permission Reason why the permission is required
android.permission.INTERNET To download the Mars imagery and metadata described above. This is the app's only permission.

Changes to this policy

If the app's behavior ever changes in a way that affects your privacy, I will update this policy and the date at the top before releasing that change. Please check this page from time to time.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at marsviewandroid@gmail.com.
